ABOUT US

Starting off as an afternoon idea in 1982 at Woody’s Boat Basin, the Powder Puff was brought to life when some locals wanted to make a bay fishing tournament for their wives to compete in. With the help of Shirley Whiteside, Mary Ann Flood, Georgia Neblett, Judy Martin and Glenn Martin, people started pitching in money for trophies and had the first auction for the individual women’s tournament.

The first Powder Puff was hosted at Woody’s Boat Basin alongside another all women’s tournament called the Petticoat, inviting women from the coastal bend to enter. After the first couple of years the Petticoat was moved to Bilmore’s and the Powder Puff became Woody’s Sports Center Ladies Powder Puff Fishing Tournament. As the Petticoat faded out, the Powder Puff grew from an individual event to a team event.

With Woody’s Sports Center closure the tournament was officially handed over to Ruth Maspero in 2023. Along with an Executive Board of Dee Wallace, Hefner Appling, Ryan Richter and Natalia Lopez, the newly formed 501c3 was initiated under the name of Ladies Powder Puff Fishing Tournament with the purpose of continuing to encourage women in the bay fishing community.

From the previous owner of Woody’s, “I’m glad to see it continue and grow, it’s part of the Port Aransas waterfront.” Glenn Martin.

Mission of Ladies Powder Puff Fishing Tournament 501c3 is “To support the youth of Port Aransas.”
